National Coming Out Day

October 11, 2022 was National Coming Out Day. For most of my life, I have been looking forward to the day when people coming out was not a real thing. I always thought people should just be who they are and not have to worry about what other people thought of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or anything like that. I liken my own sexual orientation to my eye color. I can’t change it. It is a part of who I am but my blue eyes don’t define me as a person. They tell nothing about how good I am at my job or whether I am a decent person.

Up until this last summer, I thought we were on the right track in this area. Then the Dobbs decision came down and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas said they might not stop with abortion. Decisions, including the one that made same-sex marriage legal and gave me the right to use birth control may be revisited.

Also, this summer saw the demonization of the drag queen. Right-wingers started seeing pedophiles everywhere. While human trafficking is a huge issue globally, the people who want to demonize Disney don’t really care about child welfare. All the people I see who are so concerned about biological girls competing against kids who were born male don’t care about girls' and women’s sports. These are all dog whistles to other MAGA peeps to show they are still fighting the fight…
