President Donald Trump has sent the National Guard into Washington, DC, and federalized the police. DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has said she will play along but is suing. Under the 1973 “Home Rule” act, the president does have the authority to do what Trump has done, but there are very specific circumstances that must be present. They aren’t here. There is no emergency that requires federal action.

This is the first time the Home Rule provisions have been invoked for such an action. The most dangerous day in the city’s history since the war of 1912 was January 6, 2021. That was when mobs of Trumpers stormed the Capitol. We all saw it.

Reports show that Trump spent that day watching that madness and mayhem with a glee with which kids await Santa Claus. After lying to his supporters that he offered then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi 10,000 National Guard troops, he sat on his hands for hours. During that time, his supporters beat up Capitol police, broke windows and doors, and violated the building by smearing feces on the walls. MAGA world says these were peaceful protesters and/or tourists. Sure. I know when I visit historic places I like to smear shit on the walls, too. As if.
