I’m Alice and this is the worst Wonderland ever

So, I watched the hearing last night on the attempted coup on January 6, 2021, and it broke my heart.

Before I go into that, I should admit that, in addition to my sadness that we nearly lost the republic (and may still), this is personal for me. I lived and worked on Capitol Hill for longer than I am going to say. I worked for Senator Feinstein when I first graduated college and for a good chunk of that, I was in her front office. While I only used the emergency button under my desk a few times, the response by the U.S. Capitol Police was always immediate. I never felt in danger.

Whether I was working for Feinstein or later Congressman Joe Sestak or for the United Nations or a non-profit, my work often took me to the Capitol complex for meetings, hearings, events, etc. I always felt safe. The U.S. Capitol Police provide a safety net that allows American democracy to exist.

So I watched the events on January 6 as they happened and I watched Congresswoman Liz Cheney do a masterful job of laying out what happened and how then-President Donald J. Trump knew he lost the election and lied to his supporters. He knew what was going to happen that day because he helped plan it. Moreover, the people around him knew and they told him. Who?
