The Know Nothing Party Flag

This is NOT what democracy looks like

Yesterday on Morning Joe, Joe Scarborough and Mark McKinnon lamented the end of the sane Republican party. McKinnon compared himself to Sisyphus, the king doomed to forever push a bolder up a hill, in his commitment to the hope the party can regain its moral center. I am with him on that. Not all Republicans are MAGA/Q Anon/Oath Keepers asshats who think they support the Constitution but really only support rights for those who agree with them.

The Know Nothing Party of the 1850s

This was a “nativist” party that actually went by the name of the “Native American Party,” which is ironic because it had nothing to do with actual Native Americans but that term referred to people of European ancestry who were born in the United States. According to the: Encyclopedia Brittanica:

The Know-Nothing party, by name of the American Party, U.S. a political party that flourished in the 1850s. It was an outgrowth of the strong anti-immigrant and especially anti-Roman Catholic sentiment that started to manifest itself during the 1840s.
