Our Republic Is Worth Fighting For
No, the damage Musk et al are doing may not be fixed after the next election

People tell me, “Just wait. In two or four years, you can fix whatever Trump does.” They may actually believe that. It’s not close to true.
Why? Here are a few of the ways:
- If President Trump is allowed to flaunt the Constitution and ignore court orders, we lose our allegiance to the rule of law, we stop being a serious nation, and become a banana republic. In the landmark case, Marbury v. Madison the Supreme Court codified the right the Judiciary has to interpret what is and is not Constitutional. By ignoring court orders, this president thinks he is above the law. That’s not the leader of a free republic, that is a dictator.
- We cannot allow Congress to lose the “power of the purse.” In Federalist Paper 58, James Madison argues that since the House is the legislative body closest to the people (with representatives elected directly and more frequently), it should have the “power of the purse.” This ensures that government spending remains accountable to the electorate. He also explains that this power acts as a check against potential abuses by the Senate, which was not directly elected at the time.
