It’s time for white people to end racism

Expecting Black and Brown people to end racism is like expecting rape victims to end sexual assault

As people in the United States recover from their food comas from the meal they ate on one of the most racist holidays we have, you can read my thoughts on that here, it is as good a time as any to address the white elephant in the room; white people need to do more to end the scourge of racism.

Recently, I put up a new video with my take on the news. Last Sunday, singer-songwriter, John Mellencamp sat during the National Anthem before the Colts played the Eagles and right-wingers lost their collective minds. Never mind that his daughter, Teddi Mellencamp, said, “Since as long as I can remember, my dad has never stood for the national anthem. He’s never once told me I couldn’t. He believes the national anthem is a war song … He’s been to countless games, and he’s never stood for the anthem once. He loves his country as much as anybody … But as this is the land of the free, it’s his right not to stand for something he considers to be a war anthem.”

While John Mellencamp may not have been protesting police brutality and racism in American institutions, many people sit to do just that. Maybe we can all thank Colin Kaepernick for that. Maybe not. I sit to protest…
