I think you hit the nail on the head with "reduce his presense but don't eliminate him."

Jefferson is one of our more problematic founding fathers. I think he knew the practice of slavery was wrong but was a terrible business man (look it up, Monticello was always in debt).

We need to highlight the good things he did while showcasing the evil he supported (and profited from). If we refuse to acknowledge our sinful past, we will never move on from it.
