Why are they afraid of doing big things?

These are the parts of the nation I have been to.

We aren’t in Ronald Reagan’s America anymore

There are a lot of things about that sentence that prove we are in a better place now than we were then. I miss the days when I railed against the policies he & Nancy promoted; I think they did a lot of awful things (the war on drugs that dovetailed nicely with the crack epidemic, the demonization of Black people and their families, the Iran/Contra mess, the list goes on and on).

Having said that, as he said, it was “Morning in America.” Politics ended at the water’s edge, Republicans and Democrats disagreed but they could still fulfill the basic functions of government like funding it, and the idea of a former president calling for the execution of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff that he himself appointed, well, it would be as if unicorns and extraterrestrials held an orgy on the White House lawn with Tip O’Neill and Mary Lou Retton. It just wouldn’t happen.

I was the same Democrat when I was a child as I am now. I started going door-to-door campaigning for a local politician…
