Deborah Lipstadt may be the hero we all need to bring us back to sanity
Now, some people are saying that the result of this trial will threaten free speech. I don’t accept that. I’m not attacking free speech. On the contrary, I’ve been defending it against someone who wanted to abuse it. Freedom of speech means you can say whatever you want. What you can’t do is lie, and then expect not to be held accountable for it. Not all opinions are equal. And some things happened, just like we say they do. Slavery happened, the Black Death happened. The Earth is round, the ice caps are melting, and Elvis is not alive. — Deborah Lipstadt
Deborah Lipstadt is an American historian and the Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Antisemitism. David Irving, a leading Holocaust denier, sued her for libel and lost. She wrote the book, History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier about the trial and that was made into the movie, Denial. Rachel Weisz played her in the film.
It was a good movie and an interesting story. I still cannot believe there are people out there who deny the Holocaust happened but as we live in an era when the truth is fungible, I shouldn’t. Chuck Todd has said we live in…
