Nearly two weeks ago, my mother (seen above with a bird in the Dominican Republic) broke her femur. From what I have gathered, she stood up and she broke her femur near where her hip prosthetic is. This is what I have learned in the weeks since:

  1. Take a list of medicines your LO is taking. You will need to give this to the medical professionals at the hospital. I didn’t have a printed list but I logged into the Stony Brook patient portal to get the doses and everything.
  2. Ask for a printout of medicines from the hospital. You gave them the most recent and accurate list, why do you need to take this next step? If your LO was ever in that hospital, they may refer back to the medicines they were taking earlier and use that as their guide. They may also decide some of the medicines your LO is one are not needed. My mom’s doctors at Stony Brook decided to taper her off one of her medicines for reasons that don’t make any sense and the result was really bad. The doctors also restarted a medication that had been stopped months ago. When in doubt, they will go with what is in their records. No matter how wrong that information may be.
  3. If your LO checks into rehab, get their list of medicines. This is important…
