5 Things You Can Do to Help Refugees

It’s almost World Refugee Day (June 20th), here are some ways you can make a difference

World Refugee Day was started in 2001 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention. This year’s theme is “For a world where refugees are welcomed.” Today there are more refugees than any at any time since World War II. Millions of people have been displaced in Sudan, Syria, Myanmar, Central and South America, Haiti, and elsewhere. People in the United States often think that migrants are coming to the southern border because they were invited by President Biden but the truth of the matter is more personal.

The Rohingya are fleeing genocide. People in Sudan are fleeing Civil War. People are fleeing China because of an oppressive government. Gang violence, food insecurity, poverty, and persecution are forcing people from Central and South America to leave their homes. Climate change is causing catastrophic droughts all over the globe.

It is hard to overstate how hard it is for people to leave their homes and how bad things have to be to make them make often dangerous journeys to try to find safety. This is not to get a free hotel room, as some people on right claim. These people are in life-or-death situations.
